Franz Krommer Research Paper

Emerging in the latter 18th and early 19th centuries, Franz Krommer was a Czech composer who went on to be considered one of the most successful composers in Vienna during his lifetime. Born in the Moravian town of Kamenice, Krommer displayed a very strong affinity for music early on and began studies in 1774, with his uncle Anton Krommer. Anton Krommer was a composer and choirmaster in Turan, and trained the young Krommer in both violin and organ to begin his musical development. Through his uncle, Krommer managed to become an organist at Turan in the 1770s for brief period of time. It was during this period of studying with his uncle that Krommer also took it upon himself to learn theory and composition. Following this, Krommer traveled to Vienna around 1785, but found that he was unable to obtain work as a violinist in the year that he was there. He remained director until his death in 1831. It was during these last years of his life that published the last of his symphonies, string quartets, and other miscellaneous compositions. Krommer’s works hold great significance in the classical period and he was even considered a strong rival of Beethoveen. While Beethoven ended up dominating the history books with his orchestral innovations, it is also theorized that another reason Krommer did not retain as much popularity as he should have was because of the different spellings of his name on his publications. He often published under Frantisek Kramár, but went by his Germanized name, Franz Krommer.
