Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis

Gregor’s job as a traveling salesman, selling fabric samples, is a massive part of his life pre-metamorphosis. His job provides a medium for Kafka’s thematic topics. Gregor loathed his job. Almost immediately after waking up Gregor recalls about how much he despises his job. He thinks, “what a strenuous profession I’ve chosen! Traveling day in and day out...I’m subjected to this torment of traveling, to the worries about train connections, the bad meals, the irregular hours”(11-12). The word format of a list emphasizes all of Gregor’s issues with his current occupation. The two things needed to further human life is food, and sleep. Gregor dislikes the food he consumes, the hours he works, and the work he does. Nearly every aspect of his life …show more content…
Gregor also despises his boss, because he is controlling and has unrealistic expectations of his employees. Gregor demonstrates his boss's attitude through his boss’s habit of, “sitting on his desk and talking down to his employees from above” (12). The language in this quote reveals the boss physically makes himself above his employes. The boss is literally and figuratively looking down on his workers. This displays an abuse of power from the boss that is unnecessary. He keeps his employee’s in fear for personal enjoyment. This can also be seen in how Gregor is paying off his father’s debt, another authoritative figure. Gregor has been so dedicated to his job, even with so many surrounding complications with it. Gregor is trying to logically figure out how to go about avoiding work for the day. He considers calling in sick, but remembers, “during his five years’ employment Gregor had not been ill even once” (12). Gregor’s persistence can be seen extremely clearly. To not miss a day for five years indicates dedication. Without free time, Gregor most likely doesn’t have friends. The social interaction, while traveling for his job, consists of, “an intercourse with people that constantly changes, never lasts, never becomes cordial”

His physical transformation is not only a threat for his household, but also disgusts his employer, as is evidenced by the reaction of his manager: “The manager burst out with loud “oh!” – it sounded like a rush of wind- and now he could see him standing closest to the door, his hand pressed over his open mouth slowly backing away, as if repulsed by an indivisible and unrelenting force.” (Kafka 788) This toxic situation for Gregor alludes to the ruthlessness of the society and selfishness of his own family. Gregor’s metamorphosis into a “lowly insect” brings to light the stark reality that society and family is unwilling to accept individuals with a sense of self into their…

In the beginning of the story Gregor is described as “squirming” (3) and “shocked to hear his own voice,” (5) which resembles his struggle of finding out who he is because he has turned into what family/society wants him to be. The fact that he is “shocked to hear his own voice” justifies that Gregor is not only confused on he has become, but it exposes the reality that Gregor never voices his concerns on being someone he isn’t. It startles him to realize that he is a prisoner within his own body and can’t figure out who he has become, which Kafka makes the reader feel sympathy for him because of his confusion in his mind. Towards the middle of the story Gregor “inconsistently darted madly” (18) around the room when his father was chasing him, which symbolizes Gregor’s chaotic state of trying to live up to his father’s approval because he “didn’t want to let his family down” (11) and how he feels “useless in his present state” (27). Kafka describes Gregor as “simply happy” when Gregor finds solitude in his own body, which shows that Gregor can accept who he is only in his bug form and doesn’t dwell too heavily on the expectations that has been set before him, which makes him authentic because he doesn’t feel he needs to meet his family’s expectations anymore (32).…

Gregor’s job as a traveling salesman is obviously stressful, as he says that if he was “fired on the spot…that might be good for me. If it weren’t for my parents, I would have given notice long ago” (946). This quote shows just how unfulfilling Gregor’s life was given his current job, and position in society. This frustration is somewhat explained a little later later in the Novella when Gregor is unable to go to work and a representative from the company shows up. He wonders why, at his company, “the least infraction immediately attracted the greatest suspicion” (949).…

Gregor’s transformation into a bug exemplify how little control he has and in reality how life has no purpose. This is further expressed when Gregor realizes how the idea of family becomes absurd: “Gregor realized that the monotony of family life, combined with the fact that not a soul had addressed a word directly to him, must have addled his brain in the course of the past two months…”(32). In an inhumane world, the lack of empathy towards Gregor points toward the absolute absurdity of life. Consequently, Gregor’s family life means nothing and the fact his own family cannot accept him highlights the absurdity of life. However, not only is Gregor’s life absurd in his family life but also in his work.…

Often a writer 's personal experiences impact the way a character and his surroundings are created. In the novel The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, Gregor, the main character, is influenced greatly by Kafka and his parent’s life. Pre-World War 1 values included a superior father figure which causes Kafka to feel insignificant and also caused his depression. The depression and insignificance he felt led to Gregor 's transformation into a vermin, his passive tone and his unwillingness to help himself. When Gregor woke up one morning and found himself to be a bug, he had no reaction indicating his lack of interest in himself.…
