What about a villain's actions show that they are villainous? Is it the fear he strikes in his family, in the reader too, as he scuttles across the floor, and the aggressive hiss he emits at every turn? In Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis, a loving, if not distant, relationship between Gregor Samsa and his family takes a horrifying turn when he wakes up one morning transformed into a bug. The book leads us to sympathize with Gregor, as it’s told from his point of view; However, Gregor’s condition doesn’t excuse his behavior or his villainy. I believe that Gregor Samsa’s acts of terror and the entrapment of his family in an unhealthy situation mark him as the obvious villain of the novella.

Not only do the Samsa’s have to deal with Gregor’s instability, but they also have to navigate finding food he can eat and an environment he is content in. Gregor entraps his family in a house they can no longer easily afford, and prevents them from a pursuit of their happiness, “Relocating Gregor was inconceivable...but it was much more the complete hopelessness and the thought that they had experienced a stroke of bad luck unlike any known” (Kafka 53). Hopelessness, depression, depletion- words that paint a picture of the Samsa family while living with Gregor. His complete dependency on their relationship drains the Samsas completely, as Gregor becomes bitter and selfish, “He was hardly in the mood to care for his family, filled as he was with blind rage” (Kafka 54). That quote especially shows Gregor’s willful ignorance of the strain and burden he is putting on his family. He demands their time, their care, their money. Grete, Mrs. and Mr. Samsa are now working several jobs to accommodate Gregor, and still he is ungrateful. It is not until Gregor’s death that the Samsa family are shown a light at the end of his tyranny. His death communicates one thing to them: they are

Why Gregor is More Uncanny than His Metamorphosis Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis” frightens and intrigues with the idea that a man could wake up one morning and find himself no longer human, but a giant insect. The situation leaves much to interpretation about what is possible and impossible, especially in the world that Gregor and his family occupy. However, reading the Metamorphosis through the lens of Freud’s ideas in “The Uncanny”, the story of how a man inexplicably transforms into a bug is not so much about the transformation as it is about the reality of the situation. In other words, Freud’s concept of the uncanny compels a reading of “The Metamorphosis” that does not question how Gregor changes, but examines why this change is uncanny…

Dialogue in text conveys a number of ideas in text, from emotion to general communication. In the metamorphosis Franz Kafka uses dialogue through his character to create the feelings or level of concern for the protagonist, Gregor Samsa. Samsa’s mother, Sister and even his employer the chief clerk each show their side of the situation through dialogue and internal frustration created by Kafka. After initially talking to himself in his room for a prolonged amount of time, Samsa’s mother is first introduced into this cycle of character when she comes knocking gingerly at his door. She asks “Didn’t you want to go somewhere?”…

The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, is a controversial book that is still discussed today. There are many controversies debating whether or not the book relates to him in a personal way or not, and whether or not he was actually a bug. I believe that the novella relates to him personally because of the similarities between the book and himself. The Metamorphosis takes place in an apartment, in an unknown city, and unknown time. We can assume that this takes place in Prague during the 20th century because that was the time he wrote it.…
