They had to pretend that things were ok and life was good to survive their circumstances. While reading the books Night and Olaudah Equiano there is a reoccurring theme of being in denial and content, during their horrific experiences. Both books tell the personal and tragic stories of the captivation and enslavement of Jews (Night) and Africans (Olaudah Equiano) written by men that were taken captive themselves as children.…

Kenneth Gergen makes it really clear that he does not support the assumption that a person develops one coherent identity in the article, "In Defense of Masks." Although psychologists say it is normal, Gergen mentions the opposite, "they may experience severe emotional distress" (196). The use of multiple identities represented by masks is used, because people seek approval from others and Gergen supports this idea with how different relationships causes one to learn more about themselves. I agree with Gregen 's opinion because people change based on the people they are surrounded by when growing up and the people live more effectively with their use of masks.…

In his 1977 essay, “In Defense of Masks”, Kenneth Gergen introduces the concept of multiple personas and personalities as being ‘masks’. In his psychological and sociological research, Gergen concludes that people do not have a coherent sense of identity and need masks to be happy, healthy, and successful in society. I agree with Gergen because different situations call for different personalities; such as acting professional for a job interview, being lively with friends, or maintaining a perfect image of yourself for other. Most jobs call for a certain degree of professionalism. People put on masks while at work to give off an impression of uniformity.…

For example, for a long time I attended theater classes, believing that acting would allow me to overcome social anxieties and express creativity. I would later disregard this as I was never comfortable acting in front of people. But what wearing this mask allowed was the opportunity to enter into Technical Theater classes.…

Everything evolves over time and we manage to adapt to the change. For instance, technology has been around for many years and yet, to this day, it is still advancing in becoming faster and easier to use. Kenji Yoshino, a Yale Law School Professor, writes an essay called “Covering: The Hidden Assault on Our Civil Rights”, which talks about the personal costs of covering and how people too often sacrifice authenticity in the interest of assimilation. He also talks about how covering is a form of assimilation. The ability to cover and to be authentic to one's identity in a world where change is happening everyday is possible.…

I realized that some of the men making these masks weren’t making theses masks to reflect the traits and general beauty of the women in the society. Some of these male artists were making these masks, which are basically idols and symbols of “peak” womankind, were illustrating what they wanted the women to be. I feel now that the masks weren’t meant to draw inspiration from, but to be ideals that these women had to become to be a “true” woman of the society. These aren’t masks that are made recreationally or for private patrons either, they are used only on special occasions that highlight their importance and power, treated differently than other crafts, given special choreography in ceremonies, and mostly danced by…
