Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Political Career

Born January 30, 1882 in Hyde Park, New York, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the only child of James and Sara Ann Delano Roosevelt, a very wealthy couple. In his early days of education, FDR 's parents and private tutors taught him. In the eighth grade, he went to Groton School, a boarding school in Massachusetts. In 1900, Roosevelt went to Harvard and received a degree in history in only three years. He next studied law at Columbia University and passed the board exam in 1907. During his time at Columbia, FDR married his fifth cousin, Eleanor Roosevelt, who was also Theodore Roosevelt 's niece in 1905. Together they had six children, one of which did not make it past infantry.

President Roosevelt proposed adding new justices to the Supreme Court, but it was shot down because critics said he was weakening the separation of powers. But by that time, the Supreme Court began to decide in favor of the New Deal. Roosevelt used these chats to inform the nation of actions being taken by the government. He spoke about issues like banking, unemployment, and fascism in Europe. These speeches were very informal, and they felt as if Roosevelt was speaking directly to you. This is where the name "fireside chats" came about. In total, Roosevelt gave about 30 of these speeches.

FDR 's memorial is by far the most grand and elaborate presidential memorial. Stretching 7 acres, the memorial is a walk through all four of FDR 's terms in chronological order. It is divided into four outdoor rooms, and at the very start of the memorial, there is a ten foot statue of FDR in a wheelchair. This was a controversial decision because Roosevelt tried very hard to prevent the American people from seeing him in a wheelchair, in fear of them perceiving him as weak.
