Franklin Roosevelt Criticism

Improved Essays
Franklin Roosevelt, although famous for leading our nation during a time of hardship, was notorious to us for being an economically conservative man, a capitalist in a time of financial crisis. The New Deal he presented was intended to provide relief for the banks, rescue homeowners and farmers from foreclosure, and most importantly, reform the unemployed. After being criticized of not helping the poor directly, he created the Second New Deal and further pushed for legislation that would help the economy, but they were discriminatory towards African Americans and women which brings the leftist to criticize that Roosevelt failed to help the minority groups. He did created the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) which employed 300,000 African Americans.

The general argument made by Carl N. Degler in The Third American Revolution is that the Great Depression is the third American revolution. More specifically, Degler argues that the Great Depression, which affected every American, both rich and poor, transformed the United States’ social, political, and economic landscape and convinced the people the necessity for the national government to intervene. The effects of the Great Depression is staggering. The national income plummeted to half of what it was during the boom of the 1920s.…

Roosevelt won two elections for the New York Governor seat and the led him to be a strong choice for the Democratic Presidential nomination. And his strategy for the fall campaign was very simple: let Hoover do all the work and don’t do anything crazy. Hoover was wildly unpopular with the America due to his lack of attention to the budget causing the Great Depression so Roosevelt figured he would let his unpopularity shift America to the Democratic Party. He gave speeches all across the country that were vague and filled with things everyone wanted to hear but only a few times did he share actual ideas and plans he had. In one speech to the delegates he pledged a “New Deal” for the American people the term stuck and became apart of his campaign.…

Roosevelt that specifically differentiated him from the other presidents before him, was his commitment to improve and support the citizens of America. His domestic policy in which he named, the “Square Deal”, reflected his ideas of progressivism and highlighted many political and societal changes for the benevolence of the people such as conserving natural resources, controlling corporations, and protecting consumers. By initiating his policy, Roosevelt demonstrated his commitment to reform American workplaces such as factories and mills, as well as enacting a welfare legislation across the country. If that wasn’t enough, Teddy took charge on national corporations and put them under federal regulation, for instance, he directed railroad companies and the fees they charged so that civilians weren’t overcharged to transport goods, etc. Lastly, Roosevelt asserted himself as an environmental president by generously setting aside 200 million acres of undeveloped land for conservation that would be used as national forests, wildlife refuges, and reserves.…

In 1932, the United States was suffering through the Great Depression, which placed millions of Americans out of work. Roosevelt thought that in order to stimulate the economy, he had to devise a social program called The New Deal- which included government funding, as well as new laws and regulations to protect workers during that time. This social program was in complete contrast to Reagan’s economic policies in that The New Deal got the U.S government involved with the economy, which Reagan was firmly against under the notion of capitalism. One can see that Roosevelt had a much bigger involvement with government in the economy, “Despite the fact that both FDR and Mr. Reagan greatly impacted the way America viewed itself, Roosevelt’s actions impacted the actual workings of the government and economy more than Mr. Reagan’s did Reagan had advocated the government to stay out of the economy, however, Roosevelt had advocated for more government intervention” (The Legacies of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan). Another example of contrast would be Reagan support for reduced government spending, yet Roosevelt showed support to increase government spending through federal programs.…
