Franklin D. Roosevelt's Speech During The Great Depression

By 1932, the Great Depression was in full swing and America needed reassurance that there was hope; Franklin D. Roosevelt gave them this hope. In his inaugural address, he touched upon a tremendous number of the problems that had caused the Great Depression and briefly spoke on how intended to fix them. The exemplary part of his speech was not related to the current situation of the US, it pertained to hope, and courage. Roosevelt famously said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” FDR said this to galvanize the American people to stay hopeful in one of the toughest times in recent history. To me, the best example of this was the American Revolution. In this war, the people of colonial America took the fight to one of the mightiest military superpowers of the time. This was no meager feat and took a considerable deal of courage. Ever since then, courage has been a staple of American society. Without it, large corporations, such as apple, might not exist because their founders would not have had the courage to launch them with the fear of failure looming above. Moreover, Americans might not have pushed westward to expand our great nation for they feared what lay in the wilderness. Examples of courage litter America’s history, furthermore, without these actions America would be physically and societally indistinguishable. Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s quote briefly explains what it means to be courageous, in doing so, he inspired a nation, and that nation’s future citizens to be fearless. In conclusion, his words characterize the American society, from insignificant acts such as me overcoming my fear of driving to first settlers seeking religious freedom from the crown, they cover them all.
