Franklin D. Roosevelt came into office in 1932, just 3 years after The Great Depression began. Roosevelt, with the help of Congress, made a series of programs known as the New Deal. The New Deal was focused on the three R’s: Relief for the unemployed and poor, Recovery of the economy, and Reform of system to prevent another depression. The Social Security Act of 1935 came into place to target the Great Depression. It attempted to limit old age, poverty, unemployment, widows, and fatherless children seen as dangers in American life. The act provided benefits for retirees and the unemployed. An emergency banking act was put in place in 1933 to stabilize the banking system. Many thought he was attempting to take control over the Supreme Court in a Court-packing incident in 1937. He also attempted to remove the difference of opinion with the Democratic party in the south. Last but not least, he broke tradition that was placed by George Washington on not seeking a 3rd term. In fact if I was placed in office and had to deal with the hardship he had I would have done everything he did. In all President Roosevelt did what was necessary to bring US from under tough circumstances, protect the US, help the US economy, and establish a better tomorrow.
