“Yesterday, December seventh, 1941, a date which will live in infamy, the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan. We will gain the inevitable triumph, so help us God.” – Franklin D. Roosevelt. December seventh is a date that will go down in American history. America was attacked but, it was not an attack overseas on a military base. The attack was at home. Pearl Harbor, shipyard facilities, airfields and battleships were bombed by the Japanese Empire. Due to the attack President Roosevelt and America decided that they were finally going to go to war. Even though Roosevelt did not want to go to war he decided that Japan would not get away with what they did. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born into a wealthy family. He was an only child of Sara and James Roosevelt but Franklin had a half-brother from his father’s previous marriage. (biography.com). As a child FDR collected stamps in his free time. His mother encouraged his stamp collecting because she collected she collected stamps as a child also. Roosevelt attended Goton School for boys in Massachusetts. This school was a private school for the spoiled child of the Roosevelt’s. (biography.com) It wasn’t long until Roosevelt started into political work. President FDR was sitting in the White House study; consulting with his advisor Harry Hopkins when Navy secretary rushed into to the door saying that Pearl Harbor was under attack. (history.com) Due to the limited communications in this time period that is all that FDR knew. Until someone else could tell all the details about the attack that was on going. When FDR was informed of the attack most of the damage was done. He could not really do anything about what was happening miles away other than wait nervously for another phone
