In Dutchess County, New York, the democratic leaders commended him to run for senate in 1910. His campaign was very arduous, as Roosevelt had to cover a great deal of land and persuade his mostly republican community to vote for him. He hired a car, and drove around his country talking to everyone he saw in the rural countryside. Franklin Roosevelt eventually won his spot on the state senate and beat his Republican rival, Hamilton Fish. Once Roosevelt was elected into senate in 1910, he fought against Tammany Hall. Tammany Hall was a society made to support New York’s immigrant and poor population. Tammany hall was founded in 1789. When people received help from Tammany Hall, the people would repay Tammany by voting for them in the polls. Franklin Roosevelt caught the attention of many people during his fight on Tammany Hall. The New York Times gave Roosevelt attention in the newspapers, making Roosevelt become popular with the majority of the population.
