As Winston walks through the prole district, he is angered at how much freedom they are given because he is the only that realizes they have potential to overthrow the Party. The proles are not smart to realize that they have the power and number to end the regime of of the Party. On one side, the proles are given the freedom to live their life but they lack the intellectual ability to use this freedom and rebel against the Party. And on the other side we see that Winston and some citizens of Oceania would do anything to have this type of freedom because they are tired of being controlled by big Brother. Connecting with our theme, monster, we can see that the Party uses monstrous acts to keep their society in check. The whole point of Book 1 of 1984 is explain to us that sometimes we have to fight back to get what we want. Winston is the only one that wants to end the regime of the Party and he knows that the only way to do this is to rebel against them. However, the only problem is that Winston is the only citizen that has the mindset to do this type of act.
