The three-time U.S. track and field Olympian, Gail Devers once stated, “Sometimes we fall, sometimes we stumble, but we can’t stay down. We can’t allow life to beat us down. Everything happens for a reason, and it builds character in us, and it tells us what we are about and how strong we really are when we didn’t think we could be that strong.” In the nonfiction book Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, the courageous Louis Zamperini emulated with Devers words when, even in times of hopelessness and doubt, he survived a World War II bomber plane crash into the great Pacific, where he was left and considered dead for 47 days. To say the least, Louie’s resilient and courageous personality kept him alive and sane throughout the dire situations…

It is the force that drove our evolution and refined us to our current stature today, so it is no surprise that we are amused by tales of robust endurance against the most severe circumstances. The stories The Inheritor and Side Bet are two prime examples of our fascination with these types of tales, but, when comparing the two stories of survival, one reigns as superior, with more vivid details of the setting, greater and more dynamic characters, and a more compelling plot. Between the two stories The Inheritor by Frank Roberts, and Side Bet by Will F. Jenkins, Side Bet prevails as the better…

To a certain extent, Source B and D support the attitude to women shown in Source A. as they all agree and accept the “angel in the house” philosophy. In Source A the date is not specified, but likely produced in Victorian era because the couple wear Victorian clothing, therefore will reflect Victorian values and concepts. The man in Source A is clearly distressed because he may have read bad news, the woman is fulfilling her role in life by comforting her husband; she is fulfilling her role in the Victorian period. Judging by the rest of the picture we have a beautifully dressed woman and a well-kept home, which was stereotypical of Victorian society.
