The Prairie School valued hand crafting and craftsmanship in a time of factories and mass producing products. Simplicity and function are top priorities of prairie architects. Horizontally stretching low roofs and long houses are key components of this style. The Prairie School is considered the first all American style of architecture, mainly because they reflect the way the American Midwest is undeveloped and there is more room to build long, flatter, one story houses, as opposed to urbanized areas, particularly in Europe where there is only room to build up. The Prairie School takes pride in using locally available materials and leaving most wood, brick and concrete unpainted and natural. Over the next few years, Frank Lloyd Wright would go on to design dozens more Prairie School styled buildings, the most famous being the Robie House in Hyde Park, Chicago, Unity Temple in Oak Park, and the Martin House in Buffalo, New York. The Robie House was designed for Frederick C. Robie and is commonly referred to as the best example of a prairie styled home because of its perfect linear structure, natural materials, low flat roof and art glass windows to let soft natural light in. The Martin House is a massive home on a one-and-a-half-acre lot. It was designed for a wealthy business man, Darwin D. Martin and consists of six interconnected buildings. It if frequently noted as one of Wright’s greatest accomplishments. Frank Lloyd Wright was commissioned for Unity Temple when the Unity Church burned down in 1905. He is quoted saying he wants a building that exemplifies the principles of “unity, truth, beauty, simplicity, freedom and reason.” The budget for the building was only $45,000 so Wright decided to use the cheapest material he could fathom – concrete.
