• To renew and deepen my spiritual faith, and attend church at least once a month. Due to my procrastination and busy work schedule that requires me to work every other weekend, this has made it even more difficult to attend church. I have been raised Catholic all my life and I am strongly devoted to these beliefs. In my personal experiences having a strong spiritual faith has brought me mental and emotional peace. Having a healthy spirituality is known to be beneficial to your mental and physical health.

By using Samueli Institute’s practice and model as a foundation for an optimal healing environment, both hospitals include the elements of internal, interpersonal, behavioral, and external environments. Frank R. Howard Memorial Hospital promotes themselves as an optimal healing environment by using the Planetree’s model. This model consists of developing personalized care for the patient in a therapeutic and holistic atmosphere, while focusing on healing the body, mind and spirit. By using this model, Frank Howard Memorial Hospital meet the internal elements by connecting with the individual on a personal level, and by focusing on patient centered care. For example, depending on the patient’s choice, they offer therapies such as acupuncture, Tai Chi, yoga, art and pet therapy just to name a few. As for the interpersonal element, this hospital offers family, friends, and social support for optimal health and healing. They encourage families to participate with the patient’s plan of care, offer unrestricted visiting hours, and let families stay overnight, which help provide an optimal healing environment for all people involved. In this hospital, healing intentions are aimed towards family and patient’s emotions, while offering the most excellent medical care and treatments. They also offer therapies that include music, art, and storytelling, to comfort both patient and family. On the interpersonal side, Rady Children’s Hospital recognizes the importance of positive rapport and the support between the patients, nurses, doctors and healthcare team. The support systems and relationships they provide are vital during the patient’s care in the hospital which is also key during the healing process. Like Frank Howard Memorial Hospital, Rady Children’s Hospital also meet the behavioral aspect by involving the patient and family to be included in the plan of care and treatment. Children follow by example, so the importance of educating and demonstrating good behaviors and habits are emphasized at the hospital.
