Frank Castello The Movie Essay

Frank Castello throughout the entire opening shot has his face hidden, if through some shadow or sunglasses. It’s not until he announces that anybody is the same when faced with a loaded gun, that his face his shown. This could be alluding to how Sullivan is the model, being both gangster and cop at the same time. The establishing shot at 1:35 leads to a dolly shot into the restaurant, overviewing the patrons and owners. The scene also gives the introduction to Castello as the gang member who forcefully receives dues from the restaurant; furthermore, the scene also gives the introduction to Sullivan and how he acquired his ties with Castello from an early age. At the beginning of the movie Castello states that his environment should always be something he creates. This could allude to how Castello always tries to maintain control. Such as when he kills the couple later on, or installs a mole into the police corps.

This is completely opposite to Billy Costigan who starts life amongst gangsters and studies to honestly become a state police officer. This reflects their roles where Sullivan becomes a mole for Castello, having been influenced by him for the majority of his life, and Costigan becomes a mole for the Undercover Unit despite the majority of his family members being close to Castello’s gang. Early on in the scene the officer explains how lethal the gunshot is fragmenting upon impact for maximum damage to vital organs. It’s interesting to note that almost each main character is killed by a shot to the head, as if the film was alluding to the method of death for each

When directors make a film based off of a historical event, it’s often questioned whether or not the information they provide for their story is an accurate representation of what really happened: especially if the film was a Disney production, which is targeted towards younger viewers. In the movie Pocahontas, British settlers sailed to the New World in the ship Susan Constant, in search for rumored gold and riches in Virginia, 1607. On the rigorous journey overseas, they lost many men during a violent storm. When they arrived, they immediately began their search for gold.…

Mulholland Drive is a prime example of postmodernism. It has many postmodern elements like pastiche and simulacrum for example. The film also takes the readymade style of the Hollywood film and adds a postmodern twist to it by making the movie only an illusion of Diane’s imagination. There is also the idea of invasion present in the film. This is seen by the fact that with Hollywood controlling our lives and shaping our dreams and the outside world invades our world so much that we just want silence.…

The movie titled "Liberty: 3 Stories About Life & Death" follows the lives and stories of three close friends whose appetite for life and struggles with illness and death are recorded in three separate parts. While the film exposes the sadness and tragedy that is associated with life-threatening disease and its consequences, it is also a beautiful story that explores deep connections in a close circle of lesbian friends who, despite the adversities, celebrate family, love, and life. The first part of the film, titled "Death to Life," tells a story of 66-year-old Joyce Fulton whose terminal two-year battle with brain cancer is documented in portrayed as moving backward in time. The part begins with Joyce laying on her death bed as she is surrounded by her lesbian ‘family' members who all gathered to celebrate her life and be there for her in her death.…

In filmmaking and storytelling, a common saying is that “a story is only as good as its antagonist”--and a good film will not only tell the story of its hero, but also its villain. In Memoirs of a Geisha, Hatsumomo (as a character) plays a large importance in Sayuri’s career, from the beginning at the okiya as a maid to the end of Hatsumomo’s own career. The passage where Hatsumomo confronts Sayuri and Mameha for following her (pg. 324-325) would not only translate well to film, but is also vital to the story. The scene’s simplicity demonstrates a turning point in Sayuri’s career where she gains more power in the geisha community without an antagonist at her heels. In addition, this scene addresses the formal downfall of Hatsumomo’s career and the beginning of the end to her…
