The town was actually a village with natives, little land, and no wealth. Quivira was in present day Kansas with two surrounding villages, Tabas and Harahey. Tabas was on Smokey Hill River and at Harahey there was a river with lots of land and natives. Coronado could see this land was not very useful so he left. In March 1542, Coronado returned back to Mexico disappointed with the 40 men. He explained to Mendoza why the expedition was a failure: no gold to be found, the discovery of Hawikuh and Quivira having no wealth or gold houses, no natives brought back, the loss of 200 men, and no land. Mendoza was furious that he didn’t get any gold or some native chieftains brought back to him. He took away Coronado’s privilege of being governor, but eventually changed his mind and let Coronado be governor again. Coronado retired from being governor and exploring business in 1543, He moved and settled in Mexico city. He died September 22,1556 of infectious disease. Coronado’s was well known in history for discovering the Seven cities of Cibola, being a leading grandee, finding the village of Quivira, and for beng governor.
