Francis Scott Key's The Star Spangled Banner

Decent Essays
Francis Scott Key wrote the poem that became our national anthem in 1814. He wrote it to give honor to the men that held the flag up during the ferocious battle at Fort McHenry and were willing to give their lives to keep our stars and stripes flying.

The Star Spangled Banner gives me a sense of pride knowing that even over 200 years later, that song still represents what is great about our country. We have freedom that people in other countries can only dream of. We can go to the church that we choose, we can speak out when we disagree and we can vote for the leaders of our country. We have soldiers that are willing to go to war to protect that freedom, just like the soldiers that fought in the War of 1812.When I hear the national anthem

In the novel Anthem, written by Ayn Rand, Equality 7-2521 is trying to escape the means of collectivism, which the author writes, "Collectivism holds that the individual has no right, that his right and work belong to the group (to society, to the tribe, the state, the nation) and that the group may sacrifice him at its own whim to its own interests"(Ayn Rand). Equality 7-2521's anthem is his strong personality, and individualism, much like: And, you know, being able to wear the Stars and Stripes, when you step up on one of the blocks or, you know, when you step off an airplane or when you hear the national anthem play, you know, it's one of the greatest feelings in the world because you know that they are home supporting you and watching you…

For more than 120 years, American children have recited the Pledge of Allegiance as part of their school day. Today, these 31 words serve as a unifying oath for all Americans. This poem is a written form of American patriotism, the declaration of America as a sovereign country in the world. The moment captured in this song is a Key’s witness testimony of the dramatic moment of American victory over the British invasion of Fort McHenry marked by the flag flying at “dawn’s early light”; it describes the true heart of America as “the land of the free and the brave.” Although this song intended to be the glory and pride of America, its tunes come from a deceptive origin: the “Anacreontic Song” that was dedicated to the Greek Writer Anacreon for his writings on women, sex and drugs. The patriotic melody also comes from a English drinking song which was the reason it was initially rejected as the national anthem for a hundred and forty years. The song is controversial, one that casts doubt and condemns the true American identity.…

“Ragged Old Flag” is a patriotic song that proves that you should not judge a book by its cover. It tells of an old man who shows the narrator that there is more than what meets the eye about the ragged old flag. The old man begins to account different events that the flag participated in throughout history. The ragged old flag managed to stay in good shape even after it “got cut with a sword in Chancellorsville” and it “turned blood red in World War II”. The theme of “Ragged Old Flag” is that although the United States has faced many struggles in the past it is still holding together at its seams ready for what the future will bring.…
