Francis M. Scala Francesco Maria Scala was an Italian, American citizen born in Naples, Italy in 1819 to a family with no particular interest in music. In 1841, he joined that Navy as a third class musician. After playing for the band abroad the Brandywine ship, he was later promoted to conductor of the remaining musicians. Francis resigned the position in 1842 due to severe sea sickness. He, then, transferred to the Marine facility in Washington and later became the head director of the United States Marine Corps Band. Within the following time period, Scala founded the organization of the Military’s “fifers and drummers,’’ consisting of artists spread across the world.
