Fragile X is a syndrome that I had little to no knowledge about before the presentation that Denise Devine gave us. From the presentation, I learned an array of information that will be helpful in my future. Denise touched upon a few topics that are important when understanding Fragile X syndrome. Fragile X the most common forms of mental impairment and is an inherited syndrome that is one of the leading developmental disabilities. One significant fact that is surprising is that Fragile X became aware to most people roughly 25 years ago, therefore, fairly new to the medical field. People who have fragile X have specific characteristics, but is hard tell apart from a person who does not have fragile X. Some characteristics is they have low muscle tone, long face, and large ears. Many people who have with fragile X have symptoms like flapping their hands, walking on toes, and late walking as an infant. One of the most common characteristics of someone who has fragile X is anxiety. Denise stressed the fact that people with Fragile X have anxiety or severe social anxiety. They enjoy having routines and get frustrated if those routines are interrupted. These features can be common to anyone therefore, hard to tell when a person has Fragile X. I found it interesting that Denise’s son who has fragile X is nonverbal and has more severe symptoms of fragile X, but her daughter who also has fragile X does not have the same symptoms. The only symptom that they have in common is anxiety. When looking at Denise’s daughter, you would not be able to tell she has fragile X. This concept was peculiar to me because I assumed they would have the same symptoms as another person who has fragile X. I was unaware that the symptoms would be more or less severe. This leads into the statistic about how females are less likely to inherit the typical symptoms. That is why Denise’s daughter is much different than her son since it
