To partially compensate for the loss of business Fred Fox embarked on a file-generating strategy for family law cases. His wife Jane Jones is a family therapist who counsels individuals and couples having marital difficulties. They made an arrangement where if Jones had a client who decided to separate, Jones would ask that client if she could give the client’s name to a lawyer she thinks highly of. If the client said yes, then Fox would send the client a letter offering his legal services, as follows:
Dear X:
Thank you for allowing Jane Jones to pass your name on to me. I am deeply saddened to hear of the difficult times you have been going through. I would be honoured to assist you transition through this period to a happier and more prosperous life. While the resolution of family law matters can be complicated, with my help you will be better able to quickly and effectively achieve your goals, whether they be financial or related to the custody of your children. While people say there are no guarantees in life, I guarantee that I will work hard to put the sad times behind you.
