The experiment in question was devised to determine the postmortem interval of the fowl carcass found on the New Albany campus. The hypothesis was that it had been outside for six days or less, but further investigation proved this wrong. In fact he body had been dead for eight days. A date of death was determined by calculating the average lengths of the fly larvae collected from the corpse. The first species, Calliphora vomitoria, was 11.1mm long, which placed it at eight days old. The second species, Sarcophaga crassipalpis, was also 11.1mm long, but the different rate of the growth of the species meant it was five and a half days old. The third and final species measured was Cochliomyia hominivorax, and it’s length of 10.6mm
