How to Have a Simple and Stress-Free July 4th Cookout
No matter how old you get, the Fourth of July will instantly whisk you back to the parades, picnics, and family barbecues of your childhood days. Remember how simple life seemed then? All it took was a hot dog, a slice of watermelon, and a few sparklers to turn a warm summer evening into pure magic.
Holiday celebrations have likely gotten a lot more complicated for you since those days. They’ve gotten so complicated that many people have grown to hate all holidays. But holidays are important opportunities for families and communities to bond together. They help to anchor our lives and they provide milestones along our paths as we grow up, grow older, and ultimately grow wiser.

It may be obscured by the clutter of all the magazine and blog articles about centerpieces and perfect recipes and optimal guest ratios, but the simple celebration of American independence and culture is still there. It’s been waiting for you all this time. Perhaps even more importantly, it is waiting for your children.
When you look back on those perfect July 4th celebrations, do you remember what the decorations looked like? What shape the serving bowls were? Whether the melon balls were perfectly round? Odds are you don’t remember any of those things. But you probably remember playing with friends and cousins, eating a hamburger or a hotdog, licking watermelon juice off your hands, watching fireworks, or chasing fireflies. And you probably remember having a great time.
That’s because those are the only things that really matter. Loved ones, food, seasonal treats, and time-honored traditions are the heart of any holiday.

One reason holidays are special is because they give you a chance to be with people you care about. Whether you chose to be with your neighbors, your entire extended family, a few good friends, or just your best canine friend, sharing the celebration helps make it a holiday.
