Fourth Of July: A Short Story

Great Essays
“No, no, no, no.” I repeated. I had refused to sleepover my cousin’s house without my parents, especially for a whole week. “It’s just for a few days, then Dad and I will join you the last day to celebrate the Fourth of July. Plus, you love your cousins.” My mom pressed. “No it’s not the same! And it’s not for a few days. It’s for an entire week. There’s only so much of them I can handle.” I said angrily. I was not going to do this. There was no way.
Yet, here I was a few weeks later sitting in the car on my way to New Jersey. Although I had practically got on my knees and begged my parents not to let me go, but it wouldn’t do any good. “Don’t be a baby about this. You’ll be fine. You’ll have lots of fun, I promise. Worst case scenario, you

I pulled the comforter off my body and ran to the door expecting them to have murdered each other. I peeked out the crack in the door and saw my three boy cousins chasing each other around with plastic swords. Ashley followed behind them in a tiara waving her hand like she was a princess. “What are you guys doing?” I asked them opening the door wider. Anthony started, “Since it’s pouring outside we’re playing a game inside where Ashley is the princess,” that explains that, “and we are the knights,” he pointed to himself and his brother Andrew, “and Christopher is the evil dragon trying to kidnap Ashley.” Anthony finished and Christopher roared, playing the part quite well. “Can I play too?” I asked smiling at their imagination. “You can be the queen.” Christopher suggested. “Ok just let me get my queen stuff.” I quickly walked over to the bathroom and grabbed a bathrobe. Everyone but Ashley giggled. “What’s wrong?” I asked. “If you’re the queen then that means you have all the power.” She answered frowning. I opened my mouth to answer but Anthony quickly interjected, “Yup! That’s right. She is the ruler or the land and she has magical powers that can quickly kill the dragon.” He said, motioning me to kill the dragon. Christopher fell to the floor in fake pain. Andrew frowned, “That was my job!” he yelled. I started to talk again but Ashley cut me off, “Actually that was my job! I thought I was the princess who had the special dragon killing powers.” Then she stomped away back to her room. Andrew started crying and ran off to his room. Anthony and I stood there while Christopher still was on the floor. “You can get up now Christopher.” I said quietly in frustration. “You can’t bring me back to life. That’s against the rules!” Christopher picked his head up and said. He shot up off the floor and ran into Andrew’s room. I sighed. Anthony and I stood in the hallway in the eerie silence. The

In the satirical novel, “ Dealing with Dragons” by Patricia C. Wrede, the disobedient and self-reliant Cimorene refuses the typical expectations of her family and the rest of civilization. Due to the pressure and constant reminder of how “it’s simply not done” Cimorene flees her dilemma and finds shelter with the dangerous and ferocious dragon, Kazul. Cimorene was justified in ignoring the expected social norms of Medieval society because Cimorene could overlook her life, create an impact on other princesses, her judgement would be altered, and she would gain a better respect for uncanny creatures. To begin, Cimorene could further explore the subjects that were not studied by traditional princesses and would receive an advantage when using…

“The Fourth of July” In “The Fourth of July” Audre Lorde tells her readers of her thoughts and experiences while vacationing in Washington D.C, one Fourth of July in 1947. She tells her readers that the reason they were vacationing in Washington D.C was because her older sister, whom was graduating from high school, was barred from going on her senior trip which was in Washington as well, because her class was staying in a hotel which didn’t rent rooms to colored folks. Throughout the essay Lorde shares her frustration and disgust with American racism. Unlike her parents and siblings who choose to shoo away the discrimination, Lorde can’t stand it. Although she is just graduating from the 8th grade, she already has a strong passion for change.…
