Personal Statement Almost everyone had a rod in hand as they walked through the main street headed for the pier or docks to try and reel in a tasty morsel for dinner. In my small fishing village surrounded by serene mountains and lush waters, I grew up distant from many of life’s amenities and creature comforts. Surrounded by family and relatives, I lived in a capsule of love. Little did I know that in several years, I would be on a plane bound for the United States, uncertain about my future but resolve in my dreams. As a young child, my biggest dream had been to live in the nation’s capital and one day attend college there. Despite this, I knew that my parents had not come to the decision lightly and respected their decisions. In the midst of this, I kept my composure and overcame the language and cultural obstacles before me. To this day, there have been many obstacles that have come my way. Each time with determination and grit I have been able to conquer these hurdles to gain a steady footing in my journey towards attending a four-year university and achieving my dreams. My journey from Texas to my motherland and back again has not been without its setbacks, but I would not change what has happened in my life. Uncertain when I arrived, I no longer struggle with the question of why I had to leave my family to study in the United States and am resolute in my belief that I am here for a particular reason. Although I have lost time with loved ones, this sacrifice is for and made possible by them. I wish to continue my quest towards my college degree in order to allow myself to further grow and to become ever more understanding of others. I am an individual who will never give up and who will fight for what I believe in. While I am still a traveler who is yet to reach her destination, I have enjoyed the voyage and will continue to learn and develop as I progress to my
