The purpose of college, or post-secondary school, is to help prepare for a career that requires a certain amount of education. Chelsey Atkinson, a medical assistant at The Heart Group in Evansville, said “College is only necessary if someone is going to earn a license or further education is required for a certain position.” Chelsey’s current position is a great example of just that. She is the only medical assistant in her department who was hired based on experience and wasn't required to have a degree. She has been there the longest and has a higher pay scale than any other medical assistant in that department. Not all college majors have a guarantee of good wages. Not only does it help you get a better job, it makes your pay much higher as well. On average, a college graduate with a bachelor’s degree earned $30,000 more per year than a high school graduate, or about $500,000 more over a lifetime. College graduates had lower infant mortality rates than high school graduates. Students live, go to classes, and socialize with other students from around the world and learn from professors with a variety of expertise. The community of people on a college campus means students are likely to make diverse friends and business connections, and, potentially, find a spouse or mate. Access to a variety of people allows college students to learn about different cultures, religions, and personalities they may have not been exposed to in their home towns, which broadens their knowledge and perspective (College Education -
