As Obama says, “So I think we can agree, and we need to start feeling that hunger again, you know what I mean? We need to once again fight to educate ourselves and our children like your lives depends on it, because they do” (291).This is interesting to me because back then, many African Americans were so eager to learn, they were hungry for an education. But they weren’t allowed to. The ones who attempted to teach or to learn were beaten, fined and sent to jail, and that’s if they ever got caught. Obama argues, nowadays, all kids want to do is sit on the couch for hours watching tv, playing videos games or surfing the net instead of playing outside and getting the education and exercise they need. Instead of dreaming of becoming a doctor, lawyer, architect or leader of the free world, kids are just wasting their time with nonsense entertainment. It’s understood for kids to have fun and enjoy life, but this world expects you to become great and invent something big and important. It is thrilling to hear that one in five African Americans between the ages of 25 and 29 has gotten a college degree. But to hear one in three is dropping out is such a disappointment. It’s like our ancestors worked so hard to give us a better way of life and most of us want to throw all that
