Upon completion of high school, I plan on attending a four year college. I am planning on going to either a Jesuit or public university. I am aware that these two are very different types of schools, however I want to attend a school that values community, research, and embraces some sort of a religious life. I am planning on majoring in either biology, chemistry, or biochemistry. I am also going to be on a pre-medical track because my end goal is to hopefully become wither a pediatrician or neonatologist. Personal Statement Almost everyone had a rod in hand as they walked through the main street headed for the pier or docks to try and reel in a tasty morsel for dinner. In my small fishing village surrounded by serene mountains and lush waters, I grew up distant from many of life’s amenities and creature comforts. Surrounded by family and relatives, I lived in a capsule of love. Little did I know that in several years, I would be on a plane bound for the United States, uncertain about my future but resolve in my dreams.…

Come spring of senior year and many seniors are faced with a tough decision whether they should attend community college or a four year university. When choosing between colleges people should be looking at the colleges that suit them academically, personally, and financially. According to the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, with more than 2.1 million students on 113 campuses, the California Community College is the largest system of higher education and it’s growing more and more each year. Although community colleges and four year universities may share the same purpose, community college appears to be much more affordable, the classes are smaller, and it’s very flexible with a student’s schedule. I’ve bounced around from wanting to be an ultrasound tech, to a dermatologist and finally came to the conclusion that I want to be a pediatric nurse practitioner (PNP). I’ve always enjoyed working with children and the medical aspect of it has always intrigued me as well. Here is why I want to major in nursing.…

Transferring to University of Maryland, Baltimore County will allow me to achieve my goals both in educational and personal aspects. The institution has a Biological Sciences degree which allows me, as a soon to be graduate from Hagerstown Community College with an Associate’s in Biology, to pursue and finish the next level of post-secondary education, achieving a Bachelor’s degree. In addition to pursuing a degree in Biological Sciences, UMBC has many clubs and activities to be involved in which will allow me to create new friends and provide a way to network with other students that has the same goals as me. I strongly believe that at my local community college, most of the students and professors don’t share similar ideas and goals as me and was difficult to find and achieve things I want to do after college. Thus, my passion to learn has slump down a bit.…

Many have asked, is there really a difference between community college and a four year university. The answer is, yes, of course because of the smaller classes, academics, and advantages one might receive from a community college experience. Four year colleges, on the other hand, have bigger classes, higher academic standards, and a completely different atmosphere. As a child of immigrant parents, whom never passed secondary education, I had been told several times by my mother, “I came here so you can have the opportunities I never had.” I never took her words in for consideration. Being callow was part of the predicament, and my early teenage mindset kept me in captivity. Unlike my mother, I’ve been oblivious to the fact that as a citizen, I’m capable of achieving anything. During my last two years of high school, I realized that she was utterly right.…

For some students, choosing to attend college after high school is an easy decision. Some are expected by their families to continue into higher education post high school graduation. I know a few people that are so motivated to attend college that they already know for sure what they are going to major in before they were even freshmen in high school. For me, I was not falling into that category. College was something I did not consider throughout my time in high school.…

If we are being completely honest the career I had in mind at the beginning of the year was not exactly an emergency physician, it was actually a nuclear and radiological engineer. While yes engineering more closely matches my personality type and newly sparked interest, the title of emergency physician still very much intrigued me. Even though I am still torn between the two I have chosen the Emergency Physician career to further explore in depth. Growing up I always thought I would later pursue a career in the medical field whether it be a pediatrician to even a cardiovascular surgeon.
