Leadership Skills
This theme was highlighted by the participant throughout the interview when discussing concepts such as communication, organizational skills and time management. In the interview, the participant states that it is important to have good communication skills because it is the research coordinator who has to ensure all members of the team are aware of any updates and essential information that was provided at meetings. Education is important for a project coordinator to have learned and understand research methods and statistics. Data collection and analysis is part of the role and responsibility of the research coordinator, taking courses at the undergraduate and graduate level is essential to be successful. The participant stated at the beginning of the interview that a primary qualification is understanding research methods. They stated that “any course that you can take on research methods is good to have, as well as data analysis courses.” (Appendix line A 36-39). In addition to taking courses, acquiring knowledge also occurs when doing research.
Satisfaction: Key to Success
This theme captures the idea that the participant had in regards to job satisfaction when seeing the application of research being utilized. Job satisfaction allows the researcher to continue what he or she is doing and wants to see the success of a project. The participant stated that “when you see things been applied when the decision makers are actually taking some of your findings and you see it being implemented out in the real world, is hugely satisfying. I mean that’s what we do it for.” (Appendix A line 214-217). …show more content…
The results of this study highlighted that the participant felt having an understanding of research methods, statistics, and data analysis were valuable knowledge to have. According to Meuller and Mamo (2002) acquiring knowledge and skills is a benefit to research coordinator. Mueller and Mamo’s study (2002) confirmed that learning about the research project is beneficial and that is essential to develop new knowledge over time. However, according to Mueller (2001), it was not until recently that nursing schools began to offer programs that allowed nursing students to enter careers in clinical research. Even though post-secondary nursing education does offer research classes, the activities are focused on nursing and not clinical science. In Mueller’s (2001) study, they stated that the nurses involved in their study did not take course in clinical research, but were trained to do while on the job. Mueller’s study did not indicate if this was a hindrance for nurses taking in the role as a research coordinator. Therefore it cannot be confirmed that a research-based course was essential. It would be essential for further studies to look at this aspect more in-depth to confirm this
