Essay Question #2: Every parent “parents” their children differently. However, most parents will fall between what is known as the four parenting styles of Diane Baumrind. These four parenting styles are passive, authoritarian, authoritative and disengaged. They are all based on the level of demand and responsiveness between parent and child interactions. Some of them have high levels of both demand and responsiveness, while others have low levels of both demand and responsiveness, and others fall somewhere in the middle.

I think a large part of a child’s outcome has to do with the parenting style they were raised with. And one level of success and a more positive child outcome, may differ from culture to culture. Having a more authoritarian style of parenting may have more positive outcomes in a different culture. Each culture determines what it means to be considered “successful” and just because one is considered “successful” for having certain traits and outcomes in one culture, does not mean that they are universally considered as such. It differs across the board. Some cultures value different things, so the outcomes of certain types of parenting may have different outcomes. For example, African American children raised under authoritarian control may have more of a positive outcome due to the children’s need being raised within that culture. I think this might shape child outcomes by the fact that children who may have been raised with one type of parenting style that in one culture is considered to have more positive outcomes, such as authoritative, may not be considered to be as positive of an outcome in other
