Culture can be taught and learned and transferred to and from different societies. The learning of our individual culture begins when we are born and through the remainder of our live the people we come in contact with influence certain behaviors. Like their cultural version of right and wrong. Culture is made up of everything we share as the members of a society. In more detail culture is consist four major building blocks: symbols, language, values and norms. Material culture pulls together a few of the building blocks that make up culture like symbols and norms. Some modern material culture in the United States could include Apple Products, Vogue Magazine, Starbucks and a television. An example of common material culture is jewelry. Not just in the U.S but all over the world. Wedding bands are a big part of American material culture, worn on the left hand they indicates a person marital status. In India and other South Asian countries, women wear decorative bindi for their wedding day. “Parents are the first and most influential socialization agents" (Benokraitis). Family we can start with them, because of the four primary agents they often have the greatest impact on who we become. A new born baby is born with a clean slate. It is then the parent’s job to guide them on the road towards self discovery. This is way we consider them the most influential people in our lives. We learn from our parents behavior, whether it be good or bad. They show us the dos and don’ts of behavior and the repercussions of our actions. An example of this can be if you are caught hitting say another child on the play ground. Your parent’s actions tell us something and even if we don’t notice it now they create a blue print of how we handle certain situations in the future. These blue prints find themselves in all socialized interactions that ultimately lead to reinforcement. The reason parent’s influences carry such esteem in our lives because they make all the major choices for us growing up. It’s our parents who choose where we live in, where we go to school and who we surround ourselves with. An important notice is this; political liberal people often say that conservative’s belief or vote they way they do because they were raised to.
