In C.S. Lewis’ book, Four Loves, he writes on the topic of love and outlines four different categories or types of love including: Affection, Friendship, Eros, and Charity. Throughout his book, Lewis explores each type of love and explains how each type is important. Love is often perceived as a beautiful, but confusing concept that people struggle to talk about. However, after reading this book, I have gained a new understanding on what it means to love and how I love the most.

The first type of love that the talks about is affection. Affection is very natural and modest. According to Lewis, affection is an involuntary love that we show to people we are most intimate with. This means that affection love does not chose, but It just happens. With the secular world around us, I believe that affection is the most ignored and misunderstood love of all four. When I think of affection, I think of this warm feeling that you get deep down when you are with someone you care about. Affection is ingrained in us from the moment we are born, when we are put in our mothers arms. However, this changes and affection in our lives go through cycles. For example, we first depend on our parents, then go through a rebellious stage of self-sufficiency, and then our parents end up depending on us. Things like technology has made it difficult for families to communicate. This directly affects the affection we have with our family members. Affection is also interpreted incorrectly. Unfortunately, affection has often been associated with sex. Although sex does include affection, it is much more than intimacy. You do not have sex with every person that you are affectionate for. Affection is something that I personally have been working hard on. Since its involuntary, it is less performing it, but realizing it. For example, i’ve made a more conscious effort to talk to my parents more and being more involved with my sister’s life. The hope for this is that I can demonstrate the the love for them and appreciating the people I have most affection
