Kirst-Ashman (2011) states that the mission of social work, “Is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty” (pp. 428). Therefore, these values are not only meant to be applied at local, state, and federal levels within the role of a social worker, but also globally.
When it comes to the values of respect and appreciation for differences, along with the well-being of all in society and a willingness to persist despite frustration, Jeremy Gilley gives a fantastic Ted Talk that is entitled One day of peace. Gilley wanted to get involved in helping to make a change that could be felt not just nationally, but at a global level. So his focus was on peace and he decided he would hold a conference and invite hundreds of people, including the media. When this did not work at the level he had hoped it would, he did not let frustration stand in his way.
