The four distinct generational groups in today’s workforce are Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Generation X and Generation Y.
The Traditionalist Generation, also known as the Silent Generation, the Greatest Generation, or the Veterans comprises employees and retirees born between 1928 and 1945 (Taylor, P., & Keeter, S., 2010, p. 4). Historical events that defined Baby Boomers were The Vietnam War, The Act of the Civil Rights, an assassination of JFK and Martin Luther King, and the first American on the moon. But one thing culturally unites the Boomers like no other: television (CLARUS corporation, 2013, July). The Baby Boomers were the first generation that was raised on TV. Another turning point that gave them their identity was Rock and Roll; they were in their teens during Roaring Sixties, where major music influences were Elvis Presley, the Who, and the Rolling Stones. Boomers were also the first generation that started getting married later, having kids later and spent more money and time on themselves. Unlike the previous generations that worked hard to save money for future, this generation preferred to live like today is their last day. The Baby Boomers worked hard to get ahead – educationally, financially, and personally. As they moved up the corporate ladder, they moved up to larger homes and more expensive cars. As they age, they do not want to be reminded of it and will spend for products to keep them young. And they never plan to retire – even if they retire from a successful career, they will attend college to start another career. The Baby Boomers are truly lifelong
