A compressive counseling program based on the ASCA national model is a framework for school counseling programs. The four components of the ASCA model consist of the foundation, management, delivery, and accountability. Each component addresses the counselor’s role in facilitating and enhancing learning for all students.

During the 2017 school year, Hillside Middle School had 932 students in grades 6 through 8. The sixth-grade class consisted of 170 students, seventh grade the largest at 419 students and 343 in eighth grade (School Accountability Report Card, 2016). Each of the three middle schools requires their eighth graders student to participate in Portfolio Day as a promotion requirement. Students complete a total of 8 parts, one in each of their classes Advisory, Science, History, Math, English, Elective and PE” (Hillside,

The students showed a high level of interest in the assessments and their individual results. Rather than have the eighth-grade students begin their immersion into their career and college exploration I believe students should continue the journey they began in sixth grade when they took the Career interest profile.
It would be beneficial to enhance the program by providing the students with monthly activities during Advisory that build on their strengths, interests and by giving them further opportunities for self-exploration throughout their three years in middle school. The accumulation of their career and college self-discovery would be their eighth-grade Portfolio Presentations. Activities geared for middle school students such as “Who are you?” “Dream it Plan it Do it” and “Career skills”

Consultation is an integral part of a comprehensive school counseling program and of school counseling services. Consulting is defined by the ASCA (2005) as an indirect service rendered by a school counselor that may empower the school to enhance the services offered to students. Although it is classified as an indirect service, school counselors today must include direct services to improve the achievement of all students. Some examples of consulting services offered are system support, guidance curriculum, and responsive services. As a future school counselor I will be expected to provide all of these consulting services for my students, and develop ways to incorporate them into my school counseling program.…

Over 86% of the students in Dallas ISD are economically disadvantaged, over 90% minorities. It is imperative that educators are able to understand student’s needs and effectively work with our student demographic. Often, many are focused on students’ academics but are not taking into account home life, things they have seen, or their daily stressors. For that reason, I became a counselor, to be someone students can talk to in their time of need; to hone in on those social and emotional aspects which will assist in improving their academics.…

One of the effects of World War I was that many high school students dropped out in order to work while their fathers were away at war. With the Great Depression, this problem only increased. Schools across the country reacted to this by making lower grades more rigorous, since many students would only obtain an eighth grade education. This junior high system remained in place until around the 1960s, when the Carnegie foundation funded a study that brought about several changes, eventually evolving into the middle school concept. Focusing on a student centered environment, the middle school concept rose to popularity in the 1980s through the early twenty-first century and still remains popular in various forms today.…

Education today, in my opinion, is not doing what it should be doing to ensure that America is actually living up to what it is known for...the land of opportunities. I believe that education should be about an empowering experience that helps students discover their passions, fosters their critical thinking skills, promotes an environment that accepts diversity, and encourages students to apply to skills to the outside world. This should be he purpose of American public schooling because it will help society adapt to changing times and encourage the growth of a well-rounded, modern, and accepting culture which in the long run help foster peace and equality.
