Along with the parts of the euphonium, the material from which the instrument is made also greatly affects the sound. There are four common materials from which a euphonium is commonly made. The first is yellow brass. Yellow brass is composed of 70% copper and 30% zinc. It is very susceptible to corrosion due to its high amount of zinc however, when used, the instrument produces a bright tone and it is considered to be a “brilliant” gold in appearance. The second type of material used to produce the euphonium is gold brass. Gold brass is composed of 85% copper and 15% zinc and also is less susceptible to corrosion than the yellow brass.
