In 1954, an extensive amount of the United States schools were racially segregated, due to the legal decision of Plessy vs. Ferguson in 1896, which stated the segregated facilities were constitutional as long as they were equal to each other. In the early 1950’s NAACP lawyers conveyed action lawsuits on behalf of African American children and their families in the states Kansas, South Carolina, Delaware and Virginia to allow black children the right to attend in all white school. The US Supreme Court decided to conjoin the five cases together and give it one name, Oliver Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka. A high school teacher named Marvin Pickering, sent a letter to a local newspaper, criticizing the Board’s allocation of school funds in between athletic and educational programs. He was then fired by the Board of Education after sending the letter. The Board was angry because they claimed that there were false statements in the letter. Marvin did not rest after being fired, and knew he had to do something to get his job back. He knew that it wasn’t right for someone to lose their job off of expressing their true opinion.…

Title IX Historical Setting In 1972, the U.S. Department of Education passed Title IX; thus ensuring equal opportunities for both sexes in educational institutions. This title came during a time of revolution, and society fighting for equality in all aspects of life. At this time in society, women were consistently given unequal opportunities in education, starting from primary school. The title was created to provide opportunities, in an attempt to decrease an advantage one sex held over the other. I went through high school and currently in two-year collage for diploma without knowledge of many of civil right activists that put in so much time, energy and even last drop of their blood in fight against racism and bring desegregation to the level it is today in United States. The charter school movement has been the most prominent and controversial education reform in the United States in the last twenty years. Similarly, rapidly shifting demographics in the United States have been the source of much research and attention. The convergence of these two trends is under-represented in scholarly literature. In the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights, it is stated that an individual shall have freedom of speech and freedom of the press.
