Effective leaders nurture the home-school connection, and encourage parents to participate in their child’s education. Fostering meaningful relationships with parents and the community is an essential component of effective leadership. Beyond my classroom, I worked collaboratively to create, and attend Family Math Nights where we created math games for grades K-5, handouts for parents with game rules and the skills it promoted; as well as including older students who were well-versed in math to monitor and assist throughout the evening in exchange for Community Service hours. These events brought people at all levels together for a shared purpose. Providing resources for teachers in order for them to reinforce, and remediate instruction is a tool a leader must use to promote a positive culture where students feel safe to learn and take educational risks; and teachers need to feel supported. I have motivated teachers by sharing classroom management techniques, such as the Daily 5. Aside from presenting an in-service for teachers, I also modeled by example by encouraging them to visit my classroom, as well as other rooms where effective strategies were being utilized.
