The major focus of Hirschi in this book was find an understanding of the causes of juvenile delinquent actions. There are four factors in a child’s life that helps secure the bond. Attachment, commitment, involvement, and belief (Hirschi, T. (1969) pg. 67). Children that are lacking any of these “bonds” have a high chance of acting out towards others in a physical, emotional, or vocal way because they do not have emotional stability to know how it affects others (Hirschi, T. (1969) pg. 69). Hirschi also mentions that boys whose fathers have been unemployed and or families on welfare plays in to the child becoming a delinquent (Hirschi, T. (1969) pg. 72). The social bond is of major importance in preventing delinquency. Children that are waiting and knowing that they are about to be moved are more likely to partake in delinquent acts (Striking Back in Anger). 44 percent of children that are placed in foster care are arrested at least once (Striking Back in Anger). Not knowing whether or not you are going to find a family to live with, be able to go back to their own, or even have a place to sleep would make anyone act out in a strange way because it doesn’t give the child the opportunity to find his or her identity. This leads to frustration that leads to aggression which puts the child and the surroundings in danger.
