Wake Technical Community College is the largest community college in North Carolina. Enrollment reached a record high of 22,000 students for the fall, 2014 (The News & Observer, 2014). When it comes to addressing disparities in the United States, people tend to think of each issue separately. It is easy to get overwhelmed with the racial issues that revolve around today’s society. Educational disparities occur because minority students tend to live in impoverished neighborhoods where schools are not as good and families do not have the money to pay for college. Health care disparities occur because there are no clinics or doctors in impoverished areas willing to help. However, these issues can be addressed by using an intervention that connects multiple issues and fixes disparities in each area.…
According to the U.S Census, there are around 655,000 current African American high school seniors. Yet, when reading the statistics of the Ron Brown scholarship applicant pool, there were only 4,000 students who applied. These 4,000 merely makeup .006 percent of the black seniors in this country, and they shine a light on an area that the Ron Brown Scholar program needs to address. Today, the modern education system is tainted with bureaucratic and oligarchical tendencies that prevents students of color, and low socioeconomic backgrounds from excelling in this highly competitive field.…
The first study that implemented this program took place at the Annsville Youth Center, in New York (Goldstein, 4). The study was conducted on 60 youths, in which a small group (24) received the intervention in ART, the second group (24) were given a “brief discussion” this allowed for Goldstein and his colleagues, to see if the children had the skills in them, but were just not using them, and the last group (12) received no intervention or instructions (Goldstein, 4).
