The character Fortunato is the antagonist, and Montresor the protagonist. There are quotes from this story that can prove the original thesis. “At length, I would be avenged.” (161) Fortunato is a bad man who has hurt Montresor many times in the past. This proves the thesis because he is so angry at Fortunato that he wants to kill him. Fortunato has indeed made him very sorrowful.
