The short story “The Cask of Amontillado”, By Edgar Allen Poe is a tale that takes place somewhere in Italy within the 18th century; this is understood because the use of the term “roquelaire”. Poe located this shorty story in Italy and set the time back further within the 18th century, both of these variables that the author has provided to the story are associated with the gothic genre. Fortunato is almost insulted at this point, he drops any and all proposal he is currently involved with and insists on assisting him with newly purchased wine for only he will be able to tell him truly if the bottle is indeed Amontillado. Before the two men enter the catacombs, Montresor points out that Fortunato has a bad cough and that it will only worsen because is “vaults” are so damp and have layers of nitre on the walls (Poe 1,2). Fortunato was never forced and hardly persuaded to follow Montresor into his family’s catacombs; his ego led him to follow Montresor because he felt only his opinion could be trusted. His arrogance at the beginning of “the Cask of Amontillado” is the cause of Montresor feeling the need to get revenge. His ego that there was no one better to pick than “he” to assist Montresor in telling if he had a true bottle of Amontillado is what persuaded him to enter the catacombs. His arrogance appears again and again while walking through the “vaults” and is what motivated him to continue despite his severe cough and the “nitre” on the wall. Fortunato’s ego and arrogance led him to an early death that could have been avoided with better morals and characteristics. “Arrogance and being egotistical can be the destruction to one’s self”, I feel this is the message the Poe was trying to provide the
