Fortunado Montresor Traits

The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe is one of the greatest short stories ever written. In this story, Montresor carries out a grim plan to get even with Fortunado by disposing of him once and for all. Montressor is a proud man with a secret hatred for Fortunado. Montressor hid his feelings from everyone including Fortunado himself. He never spoke of this to anyone. Fortunado was a self-absorbed man which also explains why he had no clue that Montressor despised him. This all fueled his master plan to seek and get revenge on Fortunado. He lured him to his doom in his family's palace vault which is also a tomb. Montressor secretly hated Fortunado. "Fortunado had hurt me a thousand times and I had suffered quietly. But then I learned that he had laughed at my proud name, Montressor, the name of an old and honored family. I promised myself that I would make him pay for this - that I would have revenge." Montressor built up his feelings until he could not stand it anymore. He had to seek revenge. Montressor used these characteristics against him. He met a drunk Fortunado on the street and told him that he bought a "full cask of a fine wine which they tell me is Amontillado." Fortunado could not wait, "Come. Let us go. To your vaults. To taste the wine." Many times on the way to the vault Montressor urges Fortunado to turn back. "I can see you you are trembling with the cold. Come! Let us turn back before it is too late." He knew Fortunado would not stop. He offered him some wine on the way to warm him and to keep his guard down. He continued to coax deeper into the dark vault. Fortunado appreciated the wine and the grand gestures but greedily wanted to get to the Amontillado. Montressor was counting on
