Forthips: The Importance Of Cheating In Relationships

Improved Essays
Have you ever questioned why someone cheated on you? Have you ever been accused of cheating on someone? Many people have asked these questions, in fact, 41 percent of marriages have had one or both spouses admit to infidelity, and that’s only the people who actually admitted to being unfaithful (Infidelity Statistics). The definition of cheating is different for every person you ask. Some people see cheating as even looking at another person, others are more open to the action of cheating. In the dictionary cheating is defined as, “to be sexually unfaithful; get a little on the side” (“Cheating”). Yet even though this is what cheating is defined as, is it really just getting a little something on the side, or is it a little more? I guess it …show more content…
How is that relevant to cheating? “Overall Physical affection has the tendency to release feel-good hormones. This is an important part of any healthy relationship” (“Importance Of…”). When cheating in relationships the cheater is usually unhappy and not getting the affection, or attention, that she or he needs. Therefore they look for other ways of getting physical affection from other people. Affection can be defined as a “fond attachment, devotion, or love” (“Affection”). Examples of simple gestures of physical affection include holding hands or hugging, now keep in mind, I am not talking about holding hands with your little niece while walking in the park. I am talking about holding hands of a lover who is not in your primary relationship. Even small little gestures can be seen as affection that is considered cheating. “According to psychologist, behaviors such as holding hands and hugging, elevate our levels of oxytocin… the hormone that… increases pleasure… Oxytocin is also the hormone that is released when we experience sexual pleasure…” (“Importance Of…”). If you are releasing the same hormone that is released during sex when you are holding hands, wouldn’t that pleasure be the same in cheating? Now I am not trying to say that holding hands and having sex is the same thing, but maybe when you are doing certain gestures that release the same hormone, I think you are having the same thoughts and pleasures. If you’re being physically affectionate to another person besides your primary partner, I do believe that is technically

In Ross Douthat’s Article “Is Pornography Adultery,” he discusses different cases in which pornography has been seen as “cheating” in different relationships. Now when you look up adultery the definition that comes up is, “voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and a person who is not his or her spouse.” Although by definition pornography (also known as porn) is not adultery it’s understandable why it has been seen as a problem. Douthat’s argument in this article is that, “If it’s cheating on your wife to watch while another woman performs sexually in front of you, then why isn’t it cheating to watch while the same sort of spectacle unfolds on your laptop or TV?”…

In short, Steinbock establishes a connection between sex and love, but then moves on to say that it is possible to have one without the other. This then gives rise to the notion that one can have sex without being in love, but one cannot have sex without feeling some sort of physical or psychological exposure. So then it follows that if one can have sex without love and one feels exposed physically and psychologically, is there a degree to which one can feel exposed contingent on the type of sexual encounter? An affair is recurring in that one continuously cheats on their spouse and,…

The concept of serial monogamy was something I was familiar with, but a term I did not understand until completing the course. My father has been married a total of six times, and my mother has been married twice, but with five serious relationships that followed. We hear divorce rates are on the rise, and there is a commitment problem in America, and maybe so, but I believe it has to do with not being content with what you have. In class I learned serial monogamy has a lot to do with looking for an upgrade, or the next best thing. I also believe serial monogamy stems from being not being aware of The Big Transition from romantic love to intimacy.…

In some cases, I do believe that cheating is a reaction to a personal crisis in a person's life. You often see cheating after the loss of a job or parent or during some time in a person's life when they are questioning themselves or their place in the world in some way. And as such, I think that some men, as a form of self preservation, cut themselves off from their feelings. This is another form of compartmentalization. Again, this isn't an excuse.…

When we are taught that sex and love is perfect and that it is hopelessly romantic with perfect timing, created to fulfill every desire that we hold, we create a false picture of reality. Then losing the passion to the monotony of dirty dishes and laundry isn’t very difficult to believe. Seeing past the imperfections of our spouse becomes harder. Ultimately, the lure of a new un-predictable, un-blemished, partner seems like a simple fix to our un-happy sex life. In our reading, Carroll, 2013, points out that most of the people that decide to engage in extramarital sexual activity are not doing it because they are not fulfilling there sexual desires, they engage in it because they feel like their spouse can meet other emotional needs in the relationship (pg. 219).…
