Fort Frederica is a well know fort located on St. Simons Island, and it offers a wondrous opportunity to experience an important part of Georgia’s history for no charge. This particular historical site offers many ways for you to be able to absorb what happened there. A movie is provided, along with various places that offer information for you to read about the history that occurred there. You may walk through independently if you please, and visit a gift shop that provides books and even smaller toys for children. Although the movie was a little out dated it is a beautiful site to visit, and even quiet relaxing.
Fort Frederica was founded by General James Edward Oglethorpe in 1736. It was named after the Prince of Wales, Frederick Louis. Fort Frederica’s purpose was to defend the new Georgia colony from the Spanish who engaged in many missions alongside Georgia’s coast. James Oglethorpe did not trust Spain, and he knew that this task would be challenging and thought provoking, so the colony built a massive outer wall that measured out to be one mile. It is the purpose of knowledge. As I mentioned earlier it does not stand as much today, and is merely just small foundations of what it used to be, but the origin and original purpose is what still makes it important today. It draws to all audiences who want to experience a part of history. It could be said that it is made to be mostly an informative source, but with further analysis you could see how it could be persuasive also. A colony that is doomed as a settlement still found its way to defend itself and work together against an enemy. It should persuade us today to stand as strong as it did.
