Forrest Gump, by Winston Groom, is a novel written about the extraordinary life of an idiot named Forrest Gump. Dreams, hope, friendship, and education are major themes in this book, leading to the odd, but interesting events in Forrest’s life. He did the impossible, and made it through life conquering anything imaginable. If he had a bucket list, there would be absolutely nothing left on it. Forrest proves everyone wrong when he defeats the odds. In the incredibly wise words of Forrest Gump, “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get.” By saying this, he meant that life does not always go according to plan, and much like a box of chocolates, sometimes it is extremely different. Whether it is Forrest’s mother becoming ill, or his best friend Bubba dying on the battlefield, Forrest definitely did not have it easy. He had an incredibly rough childhood, and still managed to accomplish great things. Between abuse from his father and extreme bullying as a child, another saying arose. “Run Forest Run,” came from his only friend screaming for him to run away from the bullies chasing him. Overall, Forrest went through many traumatic incidents, and persevered. When one thing did not work out, he moved on and started on something else. Winston Groom wanted to illustrate the fact that pushing through tough obstacles is key, because perseverance gave Forrest opportunities he never would have had before. Groom wanted to show kids that people did care about them in some way, and never giving up is one of life's most important characteristics. In conclusion, Forrest Gump was a bright man, in ways others were not. This enabled him to see things differently, including the fact that in bad situations, he always stayed positive. Looking at the bright side was important because there were many times that Forrest could have just given up. By staying optimistic, he was able to achieve brilliant things in life, despite his non-brilliant brain. In conclusion, Winston Groom wanted to say that intelligence level means little in what you can accomplish in life and the things you can conquer in the meantime. Groom illustrates that a simple person, smart or not, can accomplish anything, or more, that an intelligent person
