Forrest Gump is an American classic. Released in 1994, the movie won 6 Academy Awards and was the fourth highest grossing movie at the time. The movie follows Forrest, a Protestant born in 1945 with an IQ of 75, as he grows up in the deep south during a tumultuous period of American history. Mysteriously, Forrest finds himself at the center of dozens of major events of the 60’s and 70’s. He was present during the forced integration of the University of Alabama, he was one of the players in so called “Ping Pong Diplomacy,” and his call to the front desk of his hotel created the Watergate scandal. He is a Vietnam War hero, plays all American football with Bear Bryant and makes a fortune investing in Apple. Forrest lived his life as a slow, trusting, Protestant, always loyal to Jenny, his mother, …show more content…
Gump could have lived his entire life never leaving Greenbow, Alabama, but either his fate or his willingness to run allowed him to open up his mind, and the minds of his audience. At the time of the movie’s release, many Republican politicians identified with the conservative ideals present in Forrest’s life, but many others, with different backgrounds, saw the movie as simply a feel-good movie, taking us through history in the eyes of a curiously lucky guy who did not even know how lucky he was. As for a producer’s take on the movie, Steve Tisch was quoted as saying “[a]ll over the political map, people have been calling Forrest their own. But, Forrest Gump is not about politics or conservative values. It 's about humanity, it 's about respect, tolerance and unconditional love” (Byers 419). Regardless, Forrest Gump teaches Americans what is so great about this country, and that many different ideals can come together and somehow make the country

What makes the satire hard hitting rather than a light comedy is the fact that towards the end of the movie, Bugs Raplin is deemed a threat to the Bob Roberts campaign and labeled as the attempted killer and is shortly after killed by a radical republican. The movie does a fantastic job of building up to the shooting by disarming the audience by making it seem that Bob Roberts is simply a demagogue traveling around singing about the ills of American culture, but the steep drop from pandering to deception is what makes the satire of the American political process successful, illustrating that candidates become juggernauts for their own purposes. The perceived harmlessness of the candidate’s songs only helps to show how appealing to hot button topics and adhering to party lines religiously will get a candidate elected, which is a scary thought that is paralleled especially by recent elections. The point made in this movie is arguably best made through the medium it is presented in, a story. The film allows for development of the story much more rapidly than a regular documentary which in turn allows the filmmakers to tackle the exploits made by politicians much more blatantly.…

Few movies are sought fit for a remake, but in the case of The Manchurian Candidate (1962), it presented an opportunity to update this classic political thriller into modern times. Producing a remake also presents the risk of losing the original message altogether. Both films begin with an American soldier who is essentially brainwashed into becoming an assassin utilized by his own political family, more specifically his mother, to infiltrate the presidency of America. Behind the brainwashing is the most feared villains of the time, communists in 1962 and multinational corporate interest in 2004. The basic plot takes viewers through a curvy road of uncertainty in what the outcome of the film will be or where the film will take them next.…

It was interesting to see life in a mostly black populated area. The movie did a good job of representing what life in the Bronx’s looks like. Not only did it show that by the scenery, but by the way the characters interacted with one another. They used very different slang in that area, and derogatory language was used a lot throughout the movie. Forrester did use older language, but that is just a small part of the film.…

The Premise Forrest Gump is a movie detailing the life of an Alabama born man with a low I.Q. In a very realistic fashion, the audience follows Forrest as he grows through his life. Although the movie is a simplistic picture of the life of a single man, it also somewhat satirically details many of the events the fictional character would have lived through and provides a life-like picture of many people with psychological disorders in the acquaintances Forrest makes through his adventures. One of these acquaintances is Jenny Curran, who became Gump’s friend on his first day of school.…

Forrest Gump is a film that defies the conventions of filmmaking, and in that sense it is difficult to do a typical analysis of the film. It’s not so much that the film is overly complicated or that reality is always in question or any art house tricks of that kind; it’s just that Gump doesn’t really follow any rules. We begin with the most obvious: the plot. This is a film that should have redefined the biopic. It is completely about the life and times of Forrest, the protagonist, in fact through it all that’s the only thing it’s consistently about.…

Written under the genres of both Drama, Romance and Comedy, it manages to capture the essence of all three (mostly doing its best work between comedy and drama). Its wit and humor will make you laugh while its honesty, tragedy and sentimentality encourage reflection. The movie succeeds not only in content, but execution, pertaining specifically to the special effects artists who were able to place Forrest amidst many historical events and people in various footage.…
