In the Army, an NCO or officer can give an order and it will be accomplished but depending on how the people receiving the order feel could determine how well the outcome of the order turns out. Making the soldiers understand and believe in the goals that the leader has is vital to being successful. When they believe in the same goals then they will make sure that the goals are met and will do so to the best of their ability. For Ranger Challenge, I made it known to the team that the previous year we came in dead last. I held a meeting in which everyone stated the reason they joined Ranger Challenge and what their goals were to gain from it. Then I described the goal for the team, that we need to come together as family and not just a team. We needed to operate on one heart beat in pursuit of one common goal. The goal for us is to complete the competition with no regret, to leave it all out on the course, and finish together as a family. I told them all the training and workouts can only take us so far in the competition. They needed to work for one another and not for themselves. I gave them the reason why and after that all the other pieces have begun to fall into place automatically. How do I know we all have the same goal? This year has been the year where we have no had to beg people to stay on Ranger Challenge. We have had everyone there consistently and they work together as a family every morning we train. I didn’t need to read Start with Why to figure that out though. Sinek’s ideas are great and but the book I didn’t think was good because of how it repetitive it was like all books similar to this one are. I think all leaders should give their followers a reason why. They should all make them believe in a common goal and if they stand alone but continue on their journey, the followers will come to
