The True Cost
The True Cost is a documentary about the clothing that we wear, the people who make this clothing, and the impact the clothing industry has on our world. Throughout this film, Andrew Morgan travels the world and pulls back the curtain on the untold story of garment workers. Morgan takes us on an eye opening journey from the brightest runways to the darkest slums. This documentary asks us to consider, who really pays the price for our clothing?
This documentary shows the poor, socially unacceptable working conditions of the clothing factories around the world. These workers are risking their lives every day to make the clothing that we buy and wear. We wear this clothing without even thinking of the hard work put into making it. Before watching this documentary, I had no idea these kind of situations existed, all for clothing that we do not think twice about when we purchase it. I did not realize the suffering the garment workers had to go through. I believe we should raise awareness for the sake of these workers. Not only are they risking their lives every day, but they are also risking the lives of their children. As a nation, I believe we should pass more laws that prohibit the import, export, and sale of goods made with sweatshop labor. Barbara Briggs, director of the Institute of Labor Rights, stated that the United States congress has previously been introduced to bills prohibiting these sales, but the propositions of these bills died in committee. Had these bills been passed, several lives could have been saved. Poor people and children are suffering in third world countries while slaving away to make clothing for selfish Americans. Our nation needs to unite in a way that will put an end to sweatshop
