An officer 's job is to serve and protect the community, to prevent crimes, and to educate the community on such crimes. However, along with preventing crimes and patrolling, officers face large scale situations also known as critical incidents. Some of these situations can range from chemical suicide, biological, radiological, and nuclear weapons of mass destruction. An officer should be properly educated and prepared to deal with such critical incidents to ensure the safety of the community and themselves.
There are many forms of suicides officers will encounter, and detergent suicide, also known as chemical suicide, is one of them. Chemical suicide is a form of suicide by mixing two or more household chemicals, and it is often used in enclosed areas such as cars and or garages. An officer may be dispatched to a well-being check that can lead to other crimes, such as a chemical suicide. However, in any occasion that an officer does respond they should be prepared to handle the situation accordingly. Dirty bombs are usually intended to inflict psychological pain and they contain radioactive materials in the form of powder or pellets, therefore when they go off it can cause significant short term and or long term problems. Because of the radioactivity in a dirty bomb, buildings would intentionally have to be demolished, any debris in the area of contamination has to be removed, and the areas contaminated could be limited depending on the spread of the bomb. The way that a dirty bomb functions is that they do not blow up but, blow apart. Dirty bombs are easy to identify because they require a casing and detonation mechanism.
