Formative Leadership Experience

The most formative privilege that I have had in life has been working as a Branch Banker Team Leader at BB&T Bank. This has helped me to gain a much better understanding of how organizations work, especially under high pressure and staff shortage. This experience has inspired me to become a Human Resources professional with the training and guidance that I hope to receive in your program.

My involvement with learning about Human Resources began October 2013. I accepted a teller supervisor position and since then have been promoted twice into the role I am in now as Team Leader. Before delving further into leadership and management theories and styles it is good to understand the difference between a manager and a leader. Bennis and Nanus (1985, p221) state that ‘managers are people who do things right and leaders are people that do the right thing.’ Yukl (2002, p7) goes on to suggest that leadership is the process of influencing others to understand and agree about what needs to be done and how it can be done effectively, and the process of facilitating individual and collective efforts to accomplish the shared objectives. However, Stodgill (1974:7) powerfully stated that ‘there are as many definitions of leadership as there are persons who have tried to define it.’ Although there are varying definitions to leadership…

Of all the fondest memories I’ve acquired in my lifetime, one particular memory that proves itself to be especially notable was the very first time my delicate three-year old foot touched American soil. I recall clutching my mother’s warm, rugged hands between the gaps of my fingers, sensing her fearful excitement to be amongst the buildings that touched the sky and the air that is filled with the aroma of opportunity. We dreamt of many things, but never beyond our wildest ambitions, did we ever dream that I would be in a position to potentially guide other individuals trying to navigate this place we all call home. One of my biggest childhood dreams came into fruition a short while ago when I was admitted into Vanderbilt University.…

Venturing into a courtroom to defend alleged murderers and bringing suit against liable parties is an activity that most undergraduate college students forego. For me, however, that improbable world has become a reality. Fueled by a desire for justice, an interest in our national judicial fabric, and a curiosity into the perplexities of our political system, I have dedicated my college career to the field of political science. The courtroom scene mentioned before comes alive on a regular basis as I compete as a member of Boston University’s mock trial team. These sessions combine the rhetoric, presentational, and persuasive skills taught in my political classes with semi-real-world experience of practicing law in a mock setting.…
